Keep Ponds Clean Or Frogs Get Sick

Hi everyone,

Welcome back! I hope  you are learning bits of things through the blogs.

This month, I did Animal Classification and it was a bit boring at first, but I learned a lot.  We used a lesson from Mensa Education and Research Foundation and I thank them for helping me learn about classification of all animals, especially wild cats .

Click here for the link to the Animal Classification packet by Mensa Foundation

animal-classificationAnimal classification is when we organize animals into groups .There are 6 kingdoms  are  Achaebaceteria, Eubacteria, Protist, Fungi, Plants & Animal. All animals belong to the animal kingdom.

The person who first started animal classification is Carolus Linnaeus in the 18 century in 1735 in Sweden. He was called the taxonomist (a taxonomist is a person who classifies animals). Taxonomist also name animals. He started organizing them into seven levels.

  1. Kingdom
  2. Phylum
  3. Class
  4. Order
  5. Family
  6. Genus
  7. Species

An easy way to remember is to learn the phrase “Keep Ponds Clean Or Frogs Get Sick”

Animal Classification helps scientists find the similarities in animals. They can use the book, International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, or ICZN, for understanding animal classifications.

You can find animal classifications for many animals on a website that was mentioned in the lesson:

I wanted to find out the classification for a wild cat, a leopard.

  • Kingdom – Anamalia
  • Phylum – Chordata
  • Subphylum – Vertebrata
  • Class – Mammalia
  • Order – Carnivora
  • Family – Felidae (cats)
  • Genus – Panthera (roaring cats)
  • Species – Panthera pardus (leopard)

Also, I used a designing website called Canva to create posters on the seven levels of animal classification. I also created more posters on mammals, aves, and reptiles. It was fun because it felt like I was not doing work. Do check it out.

When I tried to find out about cougars, I learnt that cougars are called by different names like mountain lion, puma, or panther. Did you know they were all the same?

Hi, my name is Diya and I'm in 5th Standard. I started the blog when I was in 3rd Standard because I wanted to share my adventures in learning with you. I love learning about nature and animals. I want to make sure we don't hurt our surrounding or kill our animals. So come along with me and see what I'm learning today.

  1. Deedee, I am SO impressed! Not only do you know a lot and are able to explain your knowledge well, but you are now also doing graphic design?!? That’s wonderful! Also, I recently saw some leopards and will send you some pictures. Keep up the amazing work!

  2. Crazy Critter, I love your poster. If the person who classifies animals is called a taxonomist, then what is a taxidermist?
